The Story of Nakadanasou

In 1892, Dr. Kumaji Kimura, the principal of the local Komoro school, found a child with a wounded hand playing near the Nakadana springwater.

He noticed that the child's hand healed quickly and upon further examination, found the Nakadana springwater to be rich in minerals and nutrients that are beneficial to many ailments.  As Dr. Kimura also suffered from Thyroid related problems, he continued to study the springwater and in 1898 he opened Nakadana Onsen as a business.

島崎藤村ラウンジNakadana Onsen became well known after it was visited by the famous Japanese writer, Touson Shimazaki - who regularly visited the baths for a period of seven years.  During this time, Touson married and wrote some of his most well known works.  In fact, his book "Hatsukoi" (first love) was written while visiting the Nakadana Apple baths.  To this day, we call our floating apple baths "hatsukoi ringoburo"  - or the apple bath of first love.

Nakadana Onsen averages approximately 40ºC temperature and the water has a slight alkaline quality to it.  You'll find this faintly yellow, soft, and bubbling water adheres to your body and leaves your skin smooth and rejuvenated.

After remodelling and expanding in 1993, we re-opened as Nakadanasou and opened our restaurant Harikoshitei in 2002.  Even now, we continue to operate by Shimazaki Touson's themes of simplicity and uncomplicated life.

You too, can experience our hospitality and enjoy the calm and relaxing waters of Nakadana Onsen.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you soon.
